DEPARTMENT PROFILE
OBJECTIVES
At the end of the three year program in History the students will able to:
- Describe the social, economic, political, religious and cultural interests in a comprehensive study of the past.
- Acquire knowledge of historical texts, sources and how historians interpret past.
- Understand the basic themes, concepts, chronology and the Scope of Indian History
- Compare and contrast the major dynasties, art, architecture and literature of Karnataka.
- Explain the positive and negative impacts of travel and tourism and the importance of sustainability.
- Compare and contrast the history of the countries other than India (China, Japan and Europe)
- Develop research skills, write papers and demonstrate the ability to interpret on their own.
- Prepare for various types of Competitive Examinations
- Promote nation building activities, peace, international understanding, and to restore fruitful relations.
Introduction to the Department
The Department of History was established at the very inception of the college in 1937. It has been the hub of excellence through innovation. Many dedicated and committed lecturers have been actively associated with the department teaching History, imparting sound knowledge and moulding the character of the students. ‘The more you know about the past the better prepared you are for the future’ has always been the motto of the faculty.

Learning Outcomes:
After successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Identify and define various kinds of sources and understand how history books are shaped
- Compare and contrast various stages of progress from IVC to Vedic age and
- analyze the Jain, Buddhist and Vedic faiths
- Increase the awareness and appreciation of Transition from Territorial States to Emergence of Empires
- Analyze the emergence of the Mauryan and Gupta empires during the ―classical age‖ in India
- Evaluate the key facets of ancient society, polity and culture in South India—the
- feudalism, and the rise of technology and commerce.
- Critically examine the nature of monarchic rule and develop an comprehensive
- understanding of cultural evolution during ancient period
- Visualize where places are in relation to one another through map pointing
